In 2020, Limabix and SSG Cleaning were awarded the cleaning services contract for Sun City Resort (Sun International). On paper, it was a facilities cleaning contract. In practice, it became the start of something bigger – a platform for local empowerment, job creation and a more sustainable cleaning supply chain.
How a Cleaning Contract Became a Catalyst
A key requirement of the tender was that the successful bidder partner with an established cleaning business and a local SMME from the surrounding community, with a broad-based beneficiary structure.
For Limabix and SSG Cleaning, this was not just a compliance point. It matched how we believe cleaning contracts should work in South Africa: strong operational delivery paired with real community participation.
Today, we subcontract 50% of our cleaning contract at Sun City to our local SMME partner. That means direct participation, income and experience for people from the nearby community. What started as a cleaning solution for a prestigious resort has grown into a shared growth initiative.
The Resort as a Launchpad
Working with Sun City Resort gave Limabix and SSG Cleaning scale, structure and a chance to think differently about our role.
The contract helped us build operational capacity in the North West, invest in training and quality systems, and create a base from which new, localised projects could grow.
One key question emerged:
How do we turn everyday cleaning needs into long-term economic opportunities for local communities?
The answer led to a new idea – a containerised chemical distribution hub in the North West Province.
A Container Turned into a Chemical Hub
Together with SA Polichem, Limabix and SSG Cleaning helped set up a containerised chemical decanting and dilution facility.
Instead of simply transporting finished cleaning products into the region, we redesigned the supply chain so that more value is created locally.
How the Hub Works
Bulk shipping from Gauteng
Chemicals are transported in bulk from Gauteng to the North West. This cuts transport costs and lowers environmental impact by avoiding the movement of unnecessary water weight.
Onsite decanting and dilution
The container is equipped with electricity, purified water, air-conditioning and safety equipment. Inside, chemicals are safely diluted, mixed and packaged to consistent standards.
Local retail and distribution
From this facility we produce everyday cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, laundry powder and multi-purpose cleaners. These are sold and distributed through local spaza shops, informal traders, resellers and potential SMME distributors in the community.
Instead of all value being created elsewhere, a meaningful portion now stays in the region.
Jobs, Skills and Real Local Impact
The goal of the hub is simple: to create sustainable local work and enterprise opportunities linked to the cleaning industry.
Community members are actively involved in running the facility. They mix and decant chemicals, package and label products, and assist with distribution and local marketing. These activities build practical skills in safe chemical handling, light manufacturing and small-scale sales and logistics.
Over time, this model can give rise to micro-enterprises and township resellers, as well as new small businesses focused on cleaning products and related services. It also helps to build a local supply chain that is less dependent on external suppliers and more firmly rooted in the community itself.
In short, a single cleaning contract has become a stepping stone to broader local economic activity.
The Road Ahead: Scaling the Model
The current facility is only the first step. Our medium- to long-term vision is to roll out similar containerised hubs in other regions as demand grows, using the North West site as a working template. As the model expands, we aim to develop a network of trained micro-distributors who can service their own communities, creating local income streams and stronger, decentralised supply channels.
We are also working towards more eco-friendly formulas and refillable packaging to reduce waste and support responsible consumption. At the same time, we want a greater share of the value chain to sit within the communities we work in, aligned with broader national development priorities.
The aim is not just to clean buildings, but to reshape how cleaning products are supplied, with communities at the centre.

This project supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a practical way:
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – creating real jobs, skills and micro-enterprise opportunities.
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – using innovative containerised infrastructure to support local production.
- Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – strengthening local economies around major hubs like Sun City.
- Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – improving efficiency, cutting transport waste and using resources more wisely.

By awarding a cleaning services contract that required a strong local SMME partnership and a broad-based community benefit approach, they created the conditions for this project to grow and succeed.
What began as a standard cleaning contract is now a working example of how collaborative partnerships – between Sun International, Limabix, SSG Cleaning and local SMMEs – can support vulnerable communities, build skills and shift value chains.
